Topper bar publishing author help

Spacer Bar Blue 1

IMPORTANT NOTICE - SUBMISSIONS of unsolicited novels and novellas are CLOSED from June 1st through FALL 2010 - We only want to see short story submissions, and manuscripts from our current author team and those referred to us through our signed authors. November 1st we'll once again accept all submissions - THANK YOU!

Make the right choice when you submit your manuscript to a publisher - please read our article PUBLISHING REALITY CHECK - we "tell it like it is" about the Small Press Experience!

- Read this section before you email us with questions

- Check out our Author Help article for helpful hints

  • Do we charge to publish books? NO - we are a small, traditional press and pay small author advances and royalties
  • IMPORTANT - About bookstores - L&L Dreamspell offers bookstores and other resellers the maximum discount and returnability - THIS DOES NOT GUARANTEE BOOKSTORE PLACEMENT. Most Independent bookstores love to work with small presses and their authors. Most "chain" bookstores DO NOT - this means it is very difficult to get into the big box stores. We want you to be aware that if it is important for you to have your book on store shelves, then you'll need to find an agent and seek publication with a major New York Press and not a small press like L&L.
  • Who holds the copyright? The author - and it's your responsibility to obtain a copyright
  • What type and size books do we publish? Trade paperback - 5.5"x8.5" and EBooks (multi format)
  • What book and story lengths do you accept? Short stories from 3000 to 9000 words, Novellas from 20,000 to 40,000 words, Young Adult novels 40,000 words and up, all other Novels 50,000 words and up.
  • What about my contract? Each author's contract is negotiable, but they all have a basic set of provisions to protect both the author and L&L Dreamspell - see a Sample Contract
  • Do I have any input on my book cover? L&L Dreamspell designs a custom cover for each author's book - we try to include elements the author envisions as we work together during the design process
  • What about editing? We want you to send us an edited and polished manuscript - then we'll work with each author to refine and complete the process (it is recommended you work with a critique group, either in person or on-line - they can be very helpful!)
  • What about marketing? As with all publishers L&L Dreamspell prepares Media Releases and sends out review copies - authors must promote their work to be successful
  • What about booksignings? It's often thought that to be a professional writer you need to go on an extensive book tour and have signings in every book store possible. Sadly, most book stores (especially large chain stores) are overwhelmed with requests for signings from authors and can't fit everyone into their schedules. Small, independent book stores are more open to working with small press authors. Book signings in non-traditional places are often quite successful - such as street fairs, boutiques, art galleries, coffee shops, etc.
  • Will I make a living off my writing? There are only a select few big name authors who can earn a living from writing books - in other words, don't quit your day job when you get published!
  • Please note we are not accepting poetry, memoirs, or single author short story anthologies
  • More questions? Email the Publishing desk: Publishing@lldreamspell.com (Do NOT send submissions to this email box or to the Administrator box, they will be deleted!)
